Lyme Disease

Dangerous to humans, but also to your pet!

Vaccination Against Lyme Disease

A reliable vaccine against Lyme disease (borreliosis) has been available for dogs for some time now. Everyone has heard of this disease at some point. It also occurs in humans, often with very unpleasant and far-reaching consequences for the patient. Incidentally, the disease CANNOT be transmitted from humans to animals (or vice versa).

To build up adequate protection, the dog needs two vaccinations administered three weeks apart. To remain fully protected, the dog must be revaccinated once a year.

The best time to get vaccinated is in the spring, before the time of year when ticks are most active. This also prevents your dog from being vaccinated if he is already infected with the Lyme bacteria.

Symptoms

In dogs infected with the Lyme bacterium (Borrelia), the most common symptoms are lameness, fever, and lethargy. In severe cases, inflammation of the kidneys, the heart muscle, or the nervous system may occur.

Lyme disease is therefore caused by a bacterium transmitted through a tick bite. The vaccine ensures that the bacteria are neutralized immediately after infection. This is therefore NOT a vaccine against TICKS. Effective protection against ticks remains essential, because ticks can also transmit other diseases.
