Keeping Your Sports Dog in Shape

Work with your healthy dog to improve his or her movement, build muscle, and improve fitness.

Certified Canine Fitness Trainer (CCFT)

A Certified Canine Fitness Trainer (CCFT) works with your healthy dog to improve his or her movement, build muscle, and improve overall fitness. The goal is to prevent injuries or aid in recovery from an injury, after both the veterinarian and the physical therapist have given their approval for this program. At this time, it is not yet possible to participate in a rehabilitation training program. This program will be added later, following the completion of additional training in this area.

The training

Together with your dog, she works on body awareness by focusing on balance, strength, stamina, and flexibility. She also incorporates training exercises to keep your dog mentally engaged. You’ll learn the basics of these exercises, which you’ll then practice at home.

Since many of the exercises are new to your dog and the training progresses gradually, you don’t need to come in for weekly appointments. You’ll work on them at home for 2–4 weeks, and then we’ll review together to see if you’re performing the exercises correctly. After that, we can expand the exercises and increase the difficulty if needed.

Depending on the dog, balance equipment will eventually be used, but only once the dog has mastered the exercises on a stable surface. It is not safe to make the transition to an unstable surface before then.

All training sessions are one-on-one and last 20–30 minutes. Afterward, you’ll receive an email with information about the exercises and how to continue doing them at home.
