How can you avoid a dog bite?

The tips below were compiled, among others, by the United States Postal Service to protect their mail carriers!

How can I prevent a dog from biting me?

  • Do not approach a strange dog, especially if it is on a leash, behind a fence, or in a car.
  • Don't greet a dog too enthusiastically before it has seen you and, if necessary, sniffed you. Not even your own dog.
  • Never turn your back on a dog and/or run away. It is a dog's natural instinct to chase and catch fleeing prey.
  • Do not disturb a dog while it is eating, sleeping, chewing on a bone, or playing with its puppies.
  • Always be careful around unfamiliar dogs. Always assume that a dog that doesn't know you may see you as an intruder or a threat.

What should I do if I think a dog is about to attack?

  • Don't scream or run away. Stand completely still, with your hands at your sides. Avoid eye contact, as the dog may perceive this as a threat.
  • Stay in that position until the dog loses interest in you, and then gently back away until he walks away.
  • If the dog attacks, “block” it with your coat, bag, or anything else you can hold between yourself and the dog.
  • If you fall, or if the dog knocks you to the ground, curl up as much as possible, put your hands over your ears, and lie completely still. Don't try to scream or roll around.
